As Earth Day highlights the importance of environmental responsibility, Northern Industries Group proudly reaffirms its commitment to sustainability by leading the way with our Green Steel initiative – using reduced carbon steel across our range of products and solutions.
Working closely with supply partners we have secured access to steel, generated from a cleaner, more eco-friendly process that in turn gives our customers a meaningful choice, regarding the environmental impact of the projects we deliver.
With a presence across six companies throughout the UK, the group is building synergies across all business units to support the shared environmental and sustainability pledge, each now with access to reduced carbon Steel.
In a sector responsible for nearly 7-9%of global carbon emissions, we understand the weight of our responsibility. Through the adoption of green steel now on the stocklist, Northern Industries are positioning themselves as a forward-thinking Group dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing sustainability in every facet of our operations.
The production of green steel offers a 70% carbon reduction when compared to traditional methods of steel production. This figure is huge and as the awareness and demand for green steel increases our group is hoping to work with our customers to integrate the use of this environmentally friendly alternative within their projects.

Our Continuous Environmental Responsibility in Action
Our commitment doesn’t end at production. At Northern Industries, we ensure the sustainable sourcing of materials, monitoring supply chains and working only with responsible mining operations to minimise the environmental impact of raw materials like iron ore.
Our EcoVadis rating of over 50/100 further recognises our dedication to integrating Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility into our operations and management systems.
Our companies minimise their impact by purchasing pre-cut metal materials, reducing scrap waste to under 1% and using ISPM15 certified timber pallets, which are returned to suppliers for recycling. The group also works to enhance efficiency by continuously evaluating operations to reduce unnecessary engine idling.
In addition to sustainable production practices, the company encourages eco-friendly commuting through a cycle-to-work scheme and is transitioning its company car scheme for employees to electric and hybrid business cars only to further reduce emissions.
Sustainable Sourcing
Northern Industries not only regularly monitor their production process but also the responsible sourcing of raw materials. Here it’s about ensuring that the iron ore and other materials used in the steel production come from sustainable mining operations, further reducing the environmental impact of the companies activities.
The group also have been awarded Eco Vadis at over 50/100 showcasing dedication to sustainability through how well a company has integrated the principles of Sustainability/CSR into their business and management system.
The Making of Green Steel
Whilst traditional steel production currently relies on coal as a fuel source, our green steel alternative replaces coal with hydrogen, a clean fuel that produces only water vapour rather than carbon dioxide. This approach reduces emissions in the steelmaking process.
Unlike conventional blast furnaces, which use coal to melt steel to make the current used steel, electric arc furnaces (EAFs) use electricity to melt scrap steel. This method is far more energy-efficient and generates fewer greenhouse gases, making it an integral part of the green steel strategy.
As the UK navigates economic pressures, we recognise that buying behaviours are shifting. Producing low-carbon steel is a more demanding and resource-intensive process, but one we believe is essential for the future.
